Growling good eats at The Hungry Bear (South Lake Tahoe, California)

SMALL BITE: The Hungry Bear is the official fine-dining restaurant for The Ridge Resorts in South Lake Tahoe, a vacation rental community. However, you don’t have to be a property owner to eat at this acclaimed restaurant.  Everyone (except bears!) is welcome.

SIGNATURE DISH: Ridge Tips, which are filet mignon that is sautéed with Marsala wine, breaded and grilled. It’s not always on the menu, so call ahead of time. Steak and Lobster is a close second! And Grilled Idaho Trout with Shrimp Hash is popular with diners, too.

DISH FROM DINERS: “Went to dinner for my wife’s birthday. Everyone was super-friendly and the chef even came out to have a little conversation with us. He gave us his recommendations. It added a great personal touch that you don’t normally get at even fancier restaurants.”

FOOD FOR THOUGHT:  Chef Stephen Moise said, “My food is simple, but simple food isn’t easy to do. We make our own sauces and stocks. It takes six days to make beef stock. Takes a long time to define character with sauces. We roast our own bones and use organic vegetables, and cook it slowly.”

HOURS: Dinner only: Wednesday and Thursday, 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. The restaurant is closed on weekends for private parties and weddings.

ABOUT THE RIDGE RESORTS: An 11-acre alpine rental resort, as well as a popular wedding destination. The panoramic view takes in Lake Tahoe to the West, and Carson Valley to the East. The Ridge Tahoe offers year-round vacation rentals with a complimentary health club, indoor sports complex, indoor/outdoor swimming pools and jacuzzis, a deli, market, full-service spa and more right onsite. A complimentary shuttle service takes guests five miles down the ridge to beautiful Lake Tahoe and the casinos.
