SMALL BITE: JR’s Restaurant at the Gold Country Inn & Casino in Elko, Nevada, is that welcome beacon in the desert for many weary travelers on I-80. It’s EXACTLY what you need after a long, cramped day in the car. Food selections are the Best of the West: from burgers and sandwiches to steak and fish. SIGNATURE DISH: JR’s is known for its steaks: 16 oz. T-Bone, Rib-Eyes, Top Sirloins and Prime Rib. “We probably sell about 300-400 Top Sirloins a week,” said Manager Ben French, who helped launch the restaurant more than 20 years ago. The Garlic Burger (below) is a popular dish, and is donned with a whole clove of garlic. Deep-Fried Green Beans are also a hit. “I’m the only one in town doing it,” said French. DISH FROM DINERS: “Great food, friendly staff. What a great find in Elko, Nevada! The Mustang Burger is a must-try! Pair it with their sweet potato fries or Tobasco chips.” And this from another diner: “The Urban Cowboy pizza was delicious–even by my NYC pizza-snob standards! Fabulous crust! My fiance ordered the Fish & Chips. He is a former chef, and very much enjoyed his meal.”
FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Friday nights are Steak and Lobster Night at JR’s. Just $29.95! Ben French, the restaurant manager, said they burn through 60 pounds of prime rib and two cases of lobster each Friday. They also cook with 130 to 150 pounds of garlic a week for their burgers, steaks and mashed potatoes!
