Set sail for Bistro 17 (Fort Lauderdale, Florida)

SMALL BITE: Bistro 17 bills itself as upscale, modern American fare with a Floridian flair. It is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and is a real treasure found inside the Renaissance Fort Lauderdale Cruise Port Hotel. Ask for Carmese, the bartender, to wait on you. She has THE.BEST.PERSONALITY, and if you are of the female persuasion, she will likely call you “Beautiful!”

SIGNATURE DISH:  Bistro 17’s Grilled Bread with Sun-Dried Tomato Spread is to DIE for! If you like alligator–and who doesn’t?–we dare you to try the Roasted Corn Gator Chowder. This wonderful, gem-of-a-restaurant is known locally for Red Snapper with Caribbean Jerk Sauce. Crab cakes with Black Beans and Corn Salsa are made with fresh lump crab and fresh, roasted corn. Many wonderful options for dessert: Florida Key Lime Pie, Bread Pudding with Whiskey Butter and a Warm Skillet Salty Caramel Cookie, made with pretzels and white chocolate. One diner described this dessert as “sophisticated, yet playful.”

DISH FROM DINERS: “My husband had the Mahi-Mahi special and WOW, best Mahi-Mahi he has had in a long, long time – it was excellent.” And: “I was very impressed. The food and service were both worth the price. There were four of us and everyone raved about their dinner.”

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Executive Chef Mervel Thomas says that the secret to a good crab cake is putting the crab in at the end because it doesn’t get stringy and break apart. Thanks for the great tip, Chef!
