SMALL BITE: The Nickel is a chic, urban eatery inside the historic Hotel Teatro in the theater district of Denver, Colorado, the former Tramway Building, where customers paid a nickel to jump on the city’s streetcars in 1911. The menu features New American cuisine with a Colorado twist. Chefs incorporate locally sourced ingredients from farmers and ranchers, and the custom-made décor uses textiles sourced from the Rocky Mountain region.
SIGNATURE DISH: The Nickel won the 2015 Denver Burger Battle for the creation of the area’s best hamburger. It’s called “7X Ranch Wagyu Burger,” and features Funwerks cheddar, bone marrow-onion jam, fancy sauce and lettuce on a brioche bun, with optional Billionaire’s Bacon (below).
DISH FROM DINERS: “We went there specifically to try the burger from the Denver Burger Battle. Theirs was great — tender beef, soft, fresh bread. If you get this, you HAVE to order the Billionaire’s Bacon. I’m not a big fan of chunks of bacon, but this was by far the best bacon in any shape or form that I have ever had.” And this from another diner: “Charcuterie — just spend some money on this. We got the Iberico, prosciutto and three cheeses — hard, semi-hard and soft. It was a fantastic platter and probably my favorite part of the dinner.”
FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Hotel Teatro is distinguished as one of the “Top 10 Hotels in the World” by Expedia. Travel + Leisure Magazine ranks this Denver Hotel as one of the “World’s Best – Top 50 City Hotels of the US.” In addition, Zagat Survey has awarded Hotel Teatro the highest-rated Denver Hotel.
